Read more about my TFIOS movie review after the jump!
I was one of those lucky peeps who was invited during the special advanced screening last month, as well as the premiere the night before the regular screenings, but as the fantard that I am, I hurried to Powerplant Mall first thing in the morning last June 6th to watch again this epic love story I've been waiting to see since I've read the book.
Story follows the star-crossed teenage lovers Hazel Grace Lancaster (played by the sweet-talking Shailene Woodley)who's dying with cancer and two malfunctioning lungs and Augustus Waters (breathed to life by the luscious-lips Ansel Elgort) a cancer survivor and an amputee with a brighter outlook in life. The two met in a support group session and was easily connected by their mutual fondness for a novel that ends in the middle of a sentence, and the rest they say, is history.
The thing I loved most about the movie is how it presented the story of two kids going through the scary reality of dying without giving the viewing audience the burden of a heavy heart. The story of cancer is not heavily rubbed on to your face but you know it's present somewhere in the movie just waiting to struck you and your mellow heart. Love how they toy with my emotions! One minute I'm swooning over Gus and Hazel's undeniable charisma and crying my heart out the next. The movie isn't perfect but that's what makes it more relatable. It doesn't force you to feel"kilig" or to cry cause the superb acting of the cast already sends buckets of tears rolling down your cheeks.
Shailene Woodley is perfectly cast as Hazel Grace. You know for a fact that after this movie, she'll be diving into more mainstream leading lady roles due to her impeccable acting prowess! Despite the sweet, angelic tone of her husky voice, she depicts the role of a teenager falling in love for the first time in the most painful circumstances all too well! Her attack on the role is just suave, just right as just how I imagined the curious and intelligent Hazel would be.
And Ansel Elgort? Augustus Waters can't get hotter than him! The perfect poster boy for a romantic knight-in-shinning armor kind of roles. His lips so luscious like he's wearing mint chapstick every scene makes you wish you can momol him forevs. And OMG! Have you seen the special appearance of his sex cuts during the limo scene? Oh Gus! I mean, Oh gosh! I just died. His happy aura was just transcending on screen as he plays Gus on each scene. Baby, why you so perf???
Shai and Ansel compliment each other perfectly well. No pretensions, no forced chemistry, not even the use of cheesy lines is necessary for their chemistry to work and be felt 'cause just the mere presence of them together on screen already brings chills to every fangirl's spine. The moment Gus blurted out: "I am in love with you, Hazel Grace!" during their fancy dinner scene in Amsterdam sent lots of chuckles and whimps over the audience that fine afternoon inside Power Plant Cinema.
A must-watch film for every John Green fanatic (like myself) out there! We've waited long enough for this movie and now here it is! Please be reminded to bring tissues or even a towel enough to keep your shirts from being wet. Tears will definitely drip specially on some major scenes where Shai, Ansel and Nat did a major job in acting..
Bonus TFIOS hottie: keep an eye on Isaac (Nat Wolf) as he will be starring soon in another John Green novel-turned-movie, Paper Towns!
